Although standard alimony agreements in New York were once always such that a husband would pay for his wife's care after a divorce, 1980 saw the enactment of laws that were gender neutral after the United States Supreme Court ruled that an Alabama law was unconstitutional that required a husband to always be the party responsible for alimony payments. As any New York alimony attorney would be aware, a 1980 law called the New York Domestic Relations Law was amended to include the verbiage of "maintenance" rather than alimony which helped to remove the identifiable gender-assigned financial support from divorce law.
